Detroit - A Vanishing City

(If you've seen this on my Facebook Page, please excuse the repetition. I clicked the wrong button thinking I had put this in my blog. And of course, I didn't.)

If you ever wondered how civilizations disappeared, then take a look at this photo essay: Detroit's Beautiful, Horrible Decline, documenting Detroit in the process of vanishing.

It's all about whether a city's purpose, values, achievements and aspirations are relevant to its citizens. Sadly, it looks like 'Motor-City' Detroit over estimated its importance and forgot about the future.

  1. It seems like US is taking on the problems of older countries. We have lost our innocence. After reading alot of history, it began to happen almost not long after we declared independence. But, now we are in the throws of a country built on credit or no credit as it may occur. And also the consumer mentality.

  2. I don't think countries have innocence. They are made up of adults who lost their innocence when they started to give up ideals in place of security. But I think countries have values and you're right- the value now is consumerism which is really 'corporatism'. That means, values that matter, such as humanity and charity can't co-exist.

  3. We never could have won the war for Independence without the monetary support of the netherlands and
france. So, in effect the borrowing began from the start . And of course, all the immigrants and natives that have helped along the way. Some were just being friendly.
